The Minimum You Need to Know About Java on OpenVMS (Englisch) Taschenbuch – 7. Februar 2017
von Roland Hughes (Autor)
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/1939732026

And there is a recommendation to read this book as well:

Yes, I bought them both a few weeks ago. They are quite good.

I have "Minimum You Need to Know to Be an OpenVMS Application Developer"
It is a useful introduction with an opinionated rant in the last chapter which can be ignored. :)

The author, Roland Hughes, still sells these gems from his personal web site

https://www.theminimumyouneedtoknow.com/java_book.html

While I do not have his Java-on-OpenVMS book, I own a few others

I have the OpenVMS book. I did not get any of the other Roland published. The thought has crossed my mind. though.

I am currently living this one at work: https://www.theminimumyouneedtoknow.com/agile_book.html :(

A book about Java from 2006 written by an author that are not very good at Java is not likely to put anyone on the right track in 2024.

What version of Java was available on OpenVMS in 2006? Looks like Java 5 is probably based on this timeline https://www.java.com/releases/

I've done a casual look around and can't find anything other than versions of Java 8 though I could have sworn there was a Java 5 for VAX. But maybe I'm imagining things.

Java 5 was released in 2004 on common platforms.

But I believe the book is using the previous version: 1.4.2.

I believe what was/is/will be available are:

VAX - nothing (among other things Java mandates IEEE floating point)
Alpha - 1.3.1, 1.4.2 and 1.5/5 from HP based on commercial license from Oracle - license has expired so products are pulled
Itanium - 1.5/5, 6 and 8 from HP based on commercial license from Oracle - license has expired so products are pulled
8 from VSI based on OpenJDK - available
x86-64 - 8 from VSI based on OpenJDK - available
17 from VSI based on OpenJDK - expected later this fall

Okay, so the IEEE floating was always an issue for the VAX. I thought I'd remembered a version but apparently I was wrong. I guess it was always Alpha and newer.

I have his most recent book on Agile and have conversed personally with him as well, nice polite guy, knowledgeable it seems. Has a certain vision for the industry which some don't agree with, but can outline and reason about it well.

So I don't have the OpenVMS books, but I would recommend them based on the author.
