VMS beginner having issues setting up networking
Hello all!
I've been following Raymii's guide to setting up hobbyist amd64/VMS to the letter, and yet my VM is unable to ping outside addresses; anytime I attempt to, it throws “ping: sendto: no route to host” for IP addresses, or “%SYSTEM-F-UNREACHABLE, remote node is not currently reachable” for named websites. What do I do?

Absolute beginner to VMS; please be patient

Re: VMS beginner having issues setting up networking
Quick answer to that - you shouldn't be using IP addresses - set it up properly and use names

Thanks for the suggestion. Now, please explain how to "set it up
properly" without typing any IP addresses.
I use names. I run my own DNS server (BIND) for my own domain(s),
and I'm confident that I had to specify some actual IP addresses when I
did that. Or perhaps I'm missing something crucial.
"Quick" and "enlightening" are spelled differently for a reason?

"access" from where, exactly? What's the IP address of there?
How do you access any other computer from there?
You seem to know the IP address of the VMS system (abhi).

Re: VMS beginner having issues setting up networking
I think you may have made it more difficult here. Best to set the VMS Instance to be on the same subnet as the rest of your network. For example us 192.168.0.23 - but make sure the IP address is either not in the routers DHCP range, or reserve it on the router.vmsxpert wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 12:08 amHi ,

The I use PuTTY on a PC - create a session to the VMS Instance, and you should be good to go. I use a public key, and set it up in a directory [.ssh] in you default directory

Or, perhaps not. Looking more carefully:

> 192.168.0.1 abhi.skc.com
At least one of us is confused.

He might be _using_ DHCP, but with reports like "tcpip services i
could start .", it can be difficult for a non-psychic to guess exactly
what he did.

I got the impression from what might have been a SHOW NETWORK
command:

that the IP address of the VMS system was that. "192.168.0.1" (which I
didn't notice earlier) is new to me, and I don't know what it might
represent. Hence the (still unanswered) questions about IP addresses.
