Crash while booting installation media and previously installed system

Post by stufuller » Sun Mar 10, 2024 3:23 pm

In the beginning, I used VirtualBOX on a Windows system to setup a VM to run OpenVMS, and it worked just like the installation instructions said, as well as using the instructions on RAYMII's web site.

I then converted the virtual disks from the VirtualBOX VM to using Qemu/kvm on Ubuntu 22.04, and all went well - VMS booted on the first try. I also booted the installation ISO to make sure that still worked. Let's call this system "linux-a".

I built a newer PC (AMD Ryzen 4500) for the purposes of it being the VM host, and the first VM I tried to host on it was the VMS host. I copied the ISO and the system disk images (qcow2) from "linux-a" to the new box, which I'll refer to as "linux-b".

When trying to boot the installation ISO or the system disk images on "linux-b", I get a "Page fault with IPL too high". I know what the bugcheck means, but I have no experience in troubleshooting this and am looking for help.

Near as I can tell, the only difference between the VM setups between "linux-a" and "linux-b" is the UEFI firmware. On "linux-a", it's
UEFI x86_64: /usr/share/OVMF/OVMF_CODE_4M.fd

On "linux-b" it's:
UEFI x86_64: /usr/share/qemu/ovmf-x86_64-4m-code.bin

It does not appear that I can transfer the UEFI FW from "linux-a" to "linux-b", as they appear to be different formats, or at least the file names don't seem to match.

I'll post the booting and bugcheck data to a reply to this.

So, what am I missing here?

Thanks!

Would Linux-A happen to have an intel CPU?
OpenVMS 9.2-2 is available in the service portal, does the machine boot successfully there?

"linux-a" is an Intel Core2 6300 cpu, while "linux-b" is an AMD Ryzen 5 4500.

I'll see about getting the 9.2-2.
