Can't install on VMware Fusion on Mac

Post by pkoning » Fri May 19, 2023 2:27 pm

I have VMware Fusion 11.5.7 on an Intel Mac. I can boot the E9.2 ISO and see the boot manager, but that's about it.

"DEVICE" produces this:

Code: Select all

BOOTABLE DEVICES (System Disks, Installation Kits, other):

  FS0 (DVD) = FS0 UEFI: E9_2_1 VMS: None 1574 MB

Note: (a) no hard disk, (b) it calls itself FS0 rather than DKA100 or something like that as suggested by the manual.

So I boot FS0. It switches to the serial port terminal, which I have set up. Chose option (1) to install, and "initialize". Typed "?" for a device list:

Enter device name for target disk: (? for choices) ?

Device Name Device Type Name Volume Label Size (blocks/xB)
  ------------ ------------------------- -------------- --------------------

  No devices named * found
I tried several variations by tweaking the *.vmx file: one hard drive or two, CD drive on the same IDE as the one hard drive -- none of those make a difference. Any suggestions for things to try?

re: ...on the same IDE as the one hard drive...

Your drives should be attached to SATA controllers

I use VMware Fusion 13 (and used 12 before it) [on a Intel Mac mini] without any issues

Do you mean physical drives?
I have one or two IDE virtual hard drives configured in the VM settings (at first two 8 GB ones, I changed it to one 16 GB drive).

re: Do you mean physical drives?

Huh? On the VM.

I never used Fusion 11 so I can only speak to how I set things up using 12 and 13.

When you create the VM you add a SATA controller (or two, or three, or...), create some "disk" containers (.vmdk's) and attach them to one of the SATA controllers.

Sorry, I hope that I'm not coming across as pedantic! (not my intent)

Added in 13 minutes 30 seconds:
Sorry, I was thinking about VBOX (where the process is slightly different)...I just tried to add a disk to my VMware Fusion VM.

On VMware Fusion you create the "disk" and specify the type of controller that it uses...the default is IDE (changing it is under "advanced options" ).

That's using Fusion 13 (and what I think it looked like with 12)...never having used 11 I don't know if the user interface was the same as 12 or different.

It turns out to be there in Fusion 11 as well, I had missed it before.

With that change, and with the devices pre-extended, I can see them. Thanks!

Install was successful. Now I have to read stuff to deal with various layered products.

Thanks for the help!
