SNMP at boot

Post by afassl » Tue May 02, 2023 11:43 am

Hi,

looks like SNMP isn't coming up during boot.
Is configured as a service.

Code: Select all

VSI TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Server Components Configuration Menu

  Configuration options:

    1 - BIND Disabled Stopped 12 - NTP Disabled Stopped
    2 - BOOTP        Disabled Stopped      13 - PC-NFS       Disabled Stopped
    3 - DHCP Disabled Stopped 14 - POP Disabled Stopped
    4 - FINGER Disabled Stopped 15 - PORTMAPPER Enabled Started
    5 - FTP Enabled Started 16 - RLOGIN Disabled Stopped
    6 - IMAP Disabled Stopped 17 - RMT Disabled Stopped
    7 - LBROKER Disabled Stopped 18 - SNMP Enabled Started
    8 - LPR/LPD      Disabled Stopped      19 - TELNET       Enabled  Started
    9 - METRIC Disabled Stopped 20 - TFTP Disabled Stopped
   10 - NFS Disabled Stopped 21 - XDM Disabled Stopped
   11 - LOCKD/STATD  Disabled Stopped

    A  -  Configure options 1 - 21
   [E] -  Exit menu
but doesn't answer to our monitoring.

Only after running again tcpip$config, stopping the service, and starting the snmp probe gets the expected result.

Andreas,

I've configured SNMP on E9.2-1 and tested it locally (after an OpenVMS boot) using

$ @SYS$MANAGER:TCPIP$DEFINE_COMMANDS
$ snmp_request localhost "public" getbulk -n 2 -l 0
Warning: -n reset to 0 since -l or -t flag is specified.
1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 = volker.domain.local VMware, Inc. VMware7,1 x86_64 OpenVMS
E9.2-1 HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS
1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0 = 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.15.22.1
...
1.3.6.1.6.3.1.1.6.1.0 = - end of mib view -

Does this fails for you as well ? I don't have a SMNP client to test with locally from another node.

Did you check SYS$SYSDEVICE:[TCPIP$SNMP]TCPIP$SNMP_RUN.LOG ?
Does TCPIP SHOW SERVICE show SNMP as enabled ?

Volker.

Hi,

thanks for the quick reply.
Indeed - looks like not started:

Code: Select all

$ tcpip show service

Service Port Proto Process Address State

ESNMP 705 UDP ESNMP 0.0.0.0 Disabled
FTP                   21  TCP      TCPIP$FTP        0.0.0.0             Disabled
PORTMAPPER           111  TCP,UDP  TCPIP$PORTM      0.0.0.0             Disabled
SNMP                 161  UDP      TCPIP$SNMP       0.0.0.0             Disabled
SSHD22                22  TCP      SSHD22           0.0.0.0             Enabled
TELNET 23 TCP not defined 0.0.0.0 Enabled
Looking into tcpIp$configure:

Code: Select all

 VSI TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Server Components Configuration Menu

  Configuration options:

    1 - BIND Disabled Stopped 12 - NTP Disabled Stopped
    2 - BOOTP        Disabled Stopped      13 - PC-NFS       Disabled Stopped
    3 - DHCP Disabled Stopped 14 - POP Disabled Stopped
    4 - FINGER Disabled Stopped 15 - PORTMAPPER Enabled Started
    5 - FTP Enabled Started 16 - RLOGIN Disabled Stopped
    6 - IMAP Disabled Stopped 17 - RMT Disabled Stopped
    7 - LBROKER Disabled Stopped 18 - SNMP Enabled Started
    8 - LPR/LPD      Disabled Stopped      19 - TELNET       Enabled  Started
    9 - METRIC Disabled Stopped 20 - TFTP Disabled Stopped
   10 - NFS Disabled Stopped 21 - XDM Disabled Stopped
   11 - LOCKD/STATD  Disabled Stopped

    A  -  Configure options 1 - 21
   [E] -  Exit menu

Enter configuration option:
After selecting 18/disable-stop/18/enable the service is up.
And the snmpwalk command is working.

Code: Select all

$ tcpip show service

Service Port Proto Process Address State

ESNMP 705 UDP ESNMP 0.0.0.0 Disabled
FTP                   21  TCP      TCPIP$FTP        0.0.0.0             Disabled
PORTMAPPER           111  TCP,UDP  TCPIP$PORTM      0.0.0.0             Disabled
SNMP                 161  UDP      TCPIP$SNMP       0.0.0.0             Enabled
SSHD22                22  TCP      SSHD22           0.0.0.0             Enabled
TELNET 23 TCP not defined 0.0.0.0 Enabled
And the last hint - looking into the logs - that was the missing hint

Code: Select all

$ Set NoOn
$ VERIFY = F$VERIFY(F$TRNLNM("SYLOGIN_VERIFY"))
%DCL-E-OPENIN, error opening SSH$ROOT:[BIN]SSH$DEFINE_COMMANDS.COM; as input
-RMS-F-DEV, error in device name or inappropriate device type for operation
  TCPIP$SNMP   job terminated at  2-MAY-2023 18:44:37.01

  Accounting information:

Andreas,

the correct syntax for invoking SSH$DEFINE_COMMANDS from SYLOGIN.COM would be the one given in the Installation Guide
Chapter 4.3 Configuring VSI OpenSSH

https://docs.vmssoftware.com/vsi-openvm ... e/#d0e2655

$ @sys$sysdevice:[vms$common.openssh.bin]SSH$DEFINE_COMMANDS

This syntax does not rely on SSH$ROOT already being defined by SSH$STARTUP.COM and will correctly work, when starting the various TCPIP services.

The syntax given by executing @sys$common:[openssh.bin]ssh$install_info.com

...
Define symbols for all OpenSSH utilities:

$ @SSH$ROOT:[BIN]SSH$DEFINE_COMMANDS.COM

would also not work under these circumstances, i.e. BEFORE SSH$STARTUP has been executed.

Volker.
