Device name ddcu: - device designation?

Post by felixb » Sun Feb 02, 2020 11:46 am

In the last millenium ;) I came across a piece of documentation for OpenVMS, which listed all the possible values of the second "d" and their meaning, something like:

V = diskette
K = SCSI
U = UNIBUS (?)
Q = CD / DVD

I already looked into:
- DCL-Dictionary I & II
- User's Manual
- System Mangement Vol I & II
- System Manager's Utiities I & II
- Guide to OpenVMS File Applications
without any success...

Does anybody have an idea, where I could find that table, or has such a list?

Thank you in advance!

Hi felixb,

This list is partially available in the Guidelines for OpenVMS Cluster Confuguration manual (http://vmssoftware.com/docs/VSI_OpenVMS ... ations.pdf). Search for 'device naming conventions' within the document. You can also look at the book Getting Started with OpenVMS: A Guide for New Users which contains a nearly complete explanation of device names: https://books.google.com/books?id=y0qhF ... 22&f=false

Device name first letter:

I - Token Ring
H - ATM
T - Terminal

Device name second letter:

A - FutureBus
C - TurboChannel
E - Unibus
G - Fibre Channel
I - special DSA-compliant DSSI
L - Emulated LAN
Q - Qbus
R - EISA or ISA bus
T - BI bus
U - DSA-compliant device
W - PCI bus
X - XMI bus

Third letter; controller designation (in the order detected by hardware):

A - first controller
B - second controller, etc.

Pseudo-controllers and indirect controllers (shadow, SAN) always use A.

This info is mostly taken from Ask the Wizard (8050) and the following discussion topic: https://community.hpe.com/t5/Operating- ... -p/3379524

We should probably add these explanations to the Wiki in a more readable format.

Missing from the list for the second letter is the letter K which, I believe is for SCSI disks.
