rdb on x86_64

I saw Oracle was planning a release of rdb for OpenVMS on x86_64, but wondering where that was at or if they scrapped it. I need a DBMS, and something that fits tightly into OpenVMS would be nice, and rdb seems to fit the bill, unless someone has another good suggestion.

I've just had a quick look at https://wiki.vmssoftware.com/Open_Sourc ... or_OpenVMS and both MariaDB and SQLite3 are listed. HOWEVER, only VAX, Alpha and IA64 versions are listed so they might not (yet) be of much use. Worth bearing in mind though.

The VSI software portal has an X86 version of the libmariadb client library. You could use it to write applications now (with a non-VMS host on the server side) in anticipation of a port of Mariadb being available in the future.

The SQLite port on the wiki is 10 years old, the implementation an SourceForce builds on X86 and actively tracks the latest releases (SQLite 3.42.0).

You'll want to ask Oracle. I cannot speak for their product set about deliverables or timeframes.

I believe RDBMS on VMS x84-64 situation look like:

SQLite - available
MIMER - available
MySQL/MariaDB - waiting for C++ compiler to stabilize
the Java ones (Derby, H2, HSQLDB) - waiting for Java becoming available
Rdb - waiting for Oracle, some time ago the timeline of 2024 Q1 was mentioned (source - https://vmssoftware.com/docs/2022_accom ... 230110.pdf )
PostgreSQL - waiting for VSI - will probably take some time

I e-mailed Oracle about this. One of two things can happen. Either the Rdb team is excited to get mail, because let's be honest, it's a very niche product. Or two they'll get irritated at answering the same question again. I suspect it will be a combination of both.

Rdb fits my use case a little better than the others. I'm a phone phreaker whose hobby is running a little mini telco, and I'm using OpenVMS as the system that runs the exchange-wide messaging system. OpenVMS at one time was a pretty popular choice for telecom because..well..it can measure uptime in decades :p

But I'm in no hurry for the database piece. Right now I'm needing python, unless some brave soul decides to write an MQTT client for Pascal :p

I would not rule out Mimer or MySQL/MariaDB for that use case.

Mimer is used for a lot of industrial stuff.

And MySQL/MariaDB is used for almost everything today.

But then Rdb is almost around the corner assuming the Q1 target holds.
