Intel "Advanced Performance Extensions" for x86

Post by dmjb » Tue Jul 25, 2023 9:59 am

This may be of interest to some folks here: Intel has announced some proposed extensions for x86, including increasing the number of general purpose registers from 16 to 32. It's not clear when these will land in Intel's chips, or indeed whether it is just a hypothetical.

Well, that is the first time I've heard of it.

Actual chips have lots more internal registers from those in the x86 instruction set
