Virtual Fiber Channel Setting with VM - OpenVMSx86 V9.2

Post by jeetu.singh » Tue Feb 07, 2023 2:49 am

Hello Experts,

I tried to assign virtual Fiber Channel Adapter (HBA) so that RDM disk from storage can directly be accessed to VM.
Is Anyone having similar setup working ?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Which VM?
Have you applied the V9.2 updates?
What's the h/w info on the RDM? (make, model, etc.)

Hello,

we are using Dell (PowerEdge R640) model server having VMware ESXi, 7.0.3, 20328353 installed on it.
having SAN connectivity with unity storage.

Dell Server (PowerEdge R640)--->ESXi (VMware ESXi, 7.0.3, 20328353)--->VM ( just booted with V9.2 ISO to verify if virtual HBA is visible but no luck.

We are running VMware. Today we set compatibility to ESXi 7.0 U2 and later and installed the 9.2-1 update 200 patch. I asked our VM team to present the HBA. They are not visible yet - could be configuration still.

Is there any update on the addition/support of the VMware presenting virtual HBA and what we may need to do for configuration or driver?

What is the model number of your fibre channel HBA? Currently, only the HPE SN1100Q (QLE2692) is supported out of the box. However, if you are already running off of a non fibre channel disk, others can be made visible.

I do not know the HBA on the ESX server that is presenting the VM. I will ask our VM admin.

Added in 1 hour 14 minutes 29 seconds:
ESXi HBA = QLogic FastLinQ QL45xxx Series 10/25 GbE Controller (FCoE)

There is no driver for that card in VMS. To the best of my knowledge, VMS does not support FCoE. The closest you will come is to use the card in ESXi to configure any drives and then use ESXi to provide those drives as a regular raw disk.

The HPE SN1100Q (QLE2692) FC HBA is enabled in SYS$CONFIG.DAT as latent support for a future release. It is NOT fully tested, qualified, or supported. It is at best experimental for investigation in a future release. Use at your own risk.

The exact list of adapters, systems, switches and storage servers has not yet been determined. This project is continuing to evolve. We're working on it!
