OpenVMS on EPYC processors?

Post by jeremybegg » Wed Dec 11, 2024 9:36 pm

Hi,

I am considering the purchase of a new HP DL145 Gen11 server to be used for various purposes, one of which will be to run OpenVMS under KVM.

This server has AMD EPYC processors. Are they viable for running OpenVMS ?

Thanks,

Jeremy Begg

VSI officially like in https://vmssoftware.com/about/v923/ points to the Python script at:
https://vmssoftware.com/openkits/alpope ... scheck.zip

That is obviously only useful if you have access to such a system with an OS running and Python installed.

But maybe someone here has a HP DL145 Gen11.

I consider it most likely that it will work, but you will obviously not purchase a new server based on what some random person on the internet considers likely.

I know we have a DL385 running VMS; not sure which generation or which hypervisor.

Our DL385 is a Gen10 running VMware 8.0. It is one of our QA system.

I have successfully run VMS on both Ryzen 3950X and Ryzen 5950X processors (aka Zen 2 and Zen 3 generation chips), using both KVM and VMware. The EPYC chips of the same generation should be equivalent in all the ways which are relevant to running VMS.

DL145 Gen 11 is EPYC 8004 right? A Zen 4c CPU?

Usually CPU's adds features and don't remove features. So Zen N working makes Zen N+1 working highly likely.
