VMWare ESXi install - DKA100 goes offline (SOLVED)
Hi All,
FOUND THE ANSWER!
So the Guide had recommended two SATA drives. So I thought I was being clever by adding a second SATA controller, and connecting the second SATA drive to the second SATA controller.
But after seeing "mcr sysman io autoconfigure" panic, it occurred to me that maybe a 2nd SATA controller is not yet supported!
I removed the 2nd SATA controller and the 2nd SATA drive - now the system boots successfully and I can now login as SYSTEM. Yay! Lesson learned: don't try to be too clever!

Exciting time for VMS hobbyists!
I'm attempting to install 9.2-1 x86 on a VMWare ESXi 8.0 (on a HP DL380 box) following the instructions in vsi-openvms-x86-64-v92-installation-guide.pdf and it appeared that the initial install went smoothly.
VM Guest:
4 virtual CPUS
2 x SATA HD (32 GB each)
12 GB RAM
Serial with Named Pipes
USB 2 Controller
(SCSI controller was removed)
However, after shutting down and restarting after the install to commence the first boot on DKA100 I get an error message
"%SYSTEM-I-MOUNTVER, CALVIN$DKA100: is offline. Mount verification in progress."
The log is as follows:

Re: VMWare ESXi install - DKA100 goes offline (SOLVED)
I had seen the same disclaimer in he E9.2-1 Release Notes. I also thought I'd seen a report somewhere - either on the VSI Forums or one of the several VMS/DEC related news groups but I can't find it. I did, however, find a post by Clair Grant himself on comp.os.vms that he had ESXi 8.0 running on an HP DL580 so it must be possible under some circumstances. I"m using ESXi V7.0u3 myself. I did have one instance of DKA0: (the boot device) go offline when I was FTPing all the VSI install kits. I got one Mount Verification message but the FTP did not crash and there are no errors logged.

Re: VMWare ESXi install - DKA100 goes offline (SOLVED)
We are adding ESXi 8.0 to our "officially tested" list for the V9.2-1 release. We have had it on multiple hosts for a number of months at this point.

Thanks to those who have replied, I appreciate it!
Ok I have some more clues: it appears the that boot disk goes offline when a "mcr sysman io autoconfigure" occurs:

FOUND THE ANSWER!
So the Guide had recommended two SATA drives. So I thought I was being clever by adding a second SATA controller, and connecting the second SATA drive to the second SATA controller.
But after seeing "mcr sysman io autoconfigure" panic, it occurred to me that maybe a 2nd SATA controller is not yet supported!
I removed the 2nd SATA controller and the 2nd SATA drive - now the system boots successfully and I can now login as SYSTEM. Yay! Lesson learned: don't try to be too clever!

Re: VMWare ESXi install - DKA100 goes offline (SOLVED)
I have reproduced the problem with 2 AHCI SATA controllers on ESXi 8.0. Has anyone tried this configuration on ESXi 7.x?
We have also observed that 2 LSI SCSI controller fail on ESXi 8.0 but works on ESXi 7.x. On VBOX, I have configuration with 6 AHCI SATA controllers without any problems. We are continuing to investigate.
Note on bare metal, adding additional I/O controllers includes adding I/O processors that offload the CPU for usually more performance. In the virtual environment, adding additional virtual controllers simply adds more load on the Hypervisor that may or may not provide more performance. It is possible that additional virtual controllers might even cause lower performance.

Re: VMWare ESXi install - DKA100 goes offline (SOLVED)
Here is what my investigation has found:
ESXi has a "feature" to make the system reset go faster by initializing only select controllers. This left the second SATA port in an unexpected state causing the driver to go into a reset loop resulting in the hang. To disable this feature, power-off the VM and add this parameter:
efi.quickBoot.enabled = FALSE
Multiply SATA or LSI parallel SCSI controllers will then work correctly. It's possible that a future release might include changes to the driver to automatically set the controller in the correct state, but for now please set the ESXi parameter to avoid the problem.
