Java 11 or above?

Post by ssamayoa » Sun Jul 21, 2024 11:43 am

I wonder if someone is porting java 11 or above to OpenVMS.

Latest on VMS is 8 (x86-64 and Itanium, Alpha is stuck on 5).

Given the importance of Java then it seems obvious that VSI will need to provide new versions.

If I were to guess then I would guess that they will skip 11 and do 17.

It will be nice to see 17 on VMS.

:-)

Note though that updating from 8 to newer (11/17/21) may cause some small update problems. 11 removed a few things from Java SE including JAX-WS and JAXB.

Not a big problem - both JAX-WS and JAXB can be downloaded and used for free, but still work to be done.

Not anything VSI can do anything about either as it is a change on all platforms, but still work to be done.

We will of course support both versions of Java on x86.

Any prediction for when Java 17 will be out?

Will it be for both Itanium and x86-64 or only for x86-64?

(I somewhat suspect the latter - I seems to recall something about newer Java versions requiring newer C++ version to build)

Only for x86, since we don't have new C++ on Itanium. On x86 we don't have C++ support for TLS (thread local storage) yet, but this can be worked around.
I hope to finish the porting by the end of autumn.

I think by then I'll be up for running another game of Minecraft. I'll be sure to share feedback.
Is the update for Java 8 still in the pipeline as well, or is that being skipped for Java 11?

I'm writing a readme file for Java V8.0-412A right now. So yes, we'll ship the update in mid-August.
