Java maximum heap size too small on OpenJDK8 on x86

Post by iblowmymind » Tue Sep 12, 2023 3:17 pm

Hello,
Just tried installing the first release for OpenJDK8 for x86 on my V9.2-1 VM.
I have I18N, the recently released ECO update for V9.2-1 and OpenJDK8 installed successfully on the VM. I have 8 GB's allocated.
However, running java -XshowSettings:all reports:

Code: Select all

VM settings:
    Max. Heap Size (Estimated): 135.50M
Which is a far cry from the 8 GB's I've allocated! Trying to run a Minecraft server (1.16.5 is the latest that will support Java 8) will result in it crashing because it runs out-of-memory:

Code: Select all

$ java -Xmx512M -jar server.jar
#
# There is insufficient memory for the Java Runtime Environment to continue.
# Native memory allocation (malloc) failed to allocate 32505856 bytes for PSYoungGen::resize_generation
# Can not save log file, dump to screen..
#
# There is insufficient memory for the Java Runtime Environment to continue.
# Native memory allocation (malloc) failed to allocate 32505856 bytes for PSYoungGen::resize_generation
# Possible reasons:
# The system is out of physical RAM or swap space
# The process is running with CompressedOops enabled, and the Java Heap may be blocking the growth of the native heap
# Possible solutions:
# Reduce memory load on the system
# Increase physical memory or swap space
# Check if swap backing store is full
# Decrease Java heap size (-Xmx/-Xms)
# Decrease number of Java threads
# Decrease Java thread stack sizes (-Xss)
# Set larger code cache with -XX:ReservedCodeCacheSize=
# This output file may be truncated or incomplete.

I had managed to run a 1.12.2 vanilla server. I did have to increase pgfilquo on the user I was trying to run it as. Just to be safe I set it to allow 8gb of pagefile space. You may also have to grow your pagefile.

Try:

java "-Xmx1024m" ...

and pgflquo of 2100000 for username.

If that is still not enough, then double both!

Hello,
I had not set the PGFLQUO quota. I’ll try doing that.
Has this been documented as something to do in the release notes? I feel like it should be.

Xmx limits what JVM will give your application.

PGFLQUO limit what VMS will give any application including JVM.

Both are documented individually.

But maybe a remark in release notes could be useful.

Added in 2 minutes 35 seconds:
In many ways this is leftover from the past.

All the memory limits and default values made a lot of sense on 1/2/4/8/16/32 MB VAX and 128/256/512 MB Alpha.

Today not so much on later Alpha, Itanium and x86-64.

If you want to use modern stuff like Java then bump PGFLQUO high!!

I made it very high (like 16 million or so? lol) and tried to run with -Xmx2048m -Xms2048m. Interestingly enough, even though I have 8 GB's of RAM and only gave 2 GB to Java, console reported:

Code: Select all

%SYSTEM-W-PAGEFRAG, page file filling up; please create more space

%SYSTEM-W-PAGECRIT, page file nearly full; system trying to continue

%SYSTEM-W-PAGEFILEFULL, all page or swap files are full; system trying to conti
nue
And my process with peak page file reported:

Code: Select all

00000438 BLW RWMPB 6 16971 0 00:02:20.89 295663 35390 M
Also, if I'm not confusing terminologies, I thought paging file referred to the hard disk memory file in case primary memory (RAM) filled. Does that mean Minecraft tried to run using the hard disk as its RAM? When I check the paging file size, though, it reports 4 KB's. I'm confused...

You need a bigger pagefile.

If there is enough RAM then the program will not use the pagefile. But the program will still need to reserve space in the page file - to be sure it is there if it will ever need it.

VMS is not Windows where you can run fine with a tiny pagefile.

Allocate some GB for it.

This is what I get when i run SWAPFILES.COM to update page file size:

Code: Select all

$ @SYS$UPDATE:SWAPFILES.COM
To leave a file size at its current value type a
carriage return in response to its size prompt.
Current file sizes are:

Directory SYS$SPECIFIC:[SYSEXE]

PAGEFILE.SYS;1 4604
SYSDUMP.DMP;1 12052154

Total of 2 files, 12056758 blocks.

There are 515715760 available blocks on SYS$SYSDEVICE.

Enter new size for paging file:
Do I even have a proper page file?

PAGEFILE.SYS is the pagefile.

Odd, I thought AUTOGEN would make the pagefile larger. I don’t know why it’s only 2 KB’s.

If that is my pagefile, then how did it not immediately run out on startup since it’s 2 KB’s? Do keep in mind, I can run a Java program with Xmx1024m, but Xmx2048m fills it up.
