What is the status on COM? Is it still a thing on VMS? Can we expect a port to x64?

This would be interesting for interoperability and portability with Windows, of course.

Hi ajbrehm,

Sorry for the late reply. There's no ultimate decision taken about this product. VSI executives still debate whether its development should be revived.

I can tell you that when I discuss VMS with fellow Windows sysadmins and developers, COM is a major point. If OpenVMS is to expand from replacing old VMS boxen the ability to do crossplatform development for VMS and something else is important. And you can imagine that anyone who targets POSIX is likely just to use Linux or FreeBSD for deployment.

I am glad to hear that COM is being discussed. I guess that running on the same architecture as current versions of Windows will have an impact. If Windows and VMS run in the same VM cluster, interoperability becomes ever more important.
