Virtualbox and VMDK

Environment: Windows 11 (fully patched) on an IntelNUC PC.
Installed VirtualBox 7.0.14r161095.

From the email I have downloaded the VMDK zip file and expanded ot to get the 2 VMDK files ('community' at 637 bytes, and 'community_flat' at 5.37GB).

Using the link in the email (https://d2h1r304.na1.hubspotlinks.com/C ... jf9fL1Z204) and following the 'Windows GUI' section, I get to the guide in step 2 (https://docs.vmssoftware.com/vsi-openvm ... eateVboxVM) but there my problem starts.

Step b) says to set the ISO image to the OpenVMS ISO file - is that the VMDK? If so which one?

If I try to use the VMDK image (either one) I get

Failed to open the disk image file C:\Users\Susan\Downloads\community.vmdk.

The medium 'C:\Users\Susan\Downloads\community.vmdk' can't be used as the requested device type (DVD, detected HDD).

   On a couple of Macs, I'm using what identifies itself as:

      VMware Fusion
      Player Version 13.5.1 (23298085)
      Licensed for non-commercial use only.

(And keeping it licensed and updated is very much easier than doing so
for what I'm running on it.)

After I added vmdk file and VM1 got powered on.
But after reaching EFI shell i did this :
FS0:\\efi\vms>vms_bootmgr.efi <enter>
Command error status : Access Denied

Any clue here ...

I''m running twin Hewlett Packard 110-005a-b PCs with Fedora 39 on one and Windows 10 on the other.
On Fedora 39 I have Oracle VirtualBox 7.0.16 and on Windows 10 I have Oracle VirtualBox 7.0.10.
On Fedora 39 I created a vmdk file then installed OpenVMS v9.2-1, then upgraded to OpenVMS v9.2-2.
On Windows 10 I use the Image Community.vmdk.
On Windows 10, my VirtualBox VM Storage is configured as follows:
Storage
Controllers: SATASK
SATA Port 0: Community.vmdk (Normal 5.00 GB)
SATA Port 1: Optical Drive Host Drive 'E:'

The community.vmdk file was copied onto Windows folder then I used Choose A DIsk File to choose the .vmdk file.

The claim in https://wiki.vmssoftware.com/Windows_ho ... ox%20host. is that running with hyper-V enabled is slower than if disabled. This is echoed in section 2.33 of the Virtualbox documention. Has anyone tried to measure this effect with a VMS guest (e.g. compare the CPU and elapsed time from the sysinit accounting shown on the console)?

It's not pretty, but it's a start: I've written a brief document that takes VSI's instructions as a starting point, and have tweaked them for getting the community VMDK kit up-and-booted in VirtualBox under Windows. I've attached it to this post.

I don't claim any rights to it whatsoever, so feel free to use it, modify it, share it, wrap fish with it, or line bird cages with it.

Perhaps I'll get one "attaboy" from VSI for making a contribution to the community that they'd been hoping to see more of.

In advance, I apologize for the poor formatting. I don't have a PDF editor at my disposal, so using VSI's document meant copying-and-pasting from my screen into a Microsoft Word document. Likewise for their HTML web page.

The main point in doing this was to share info with my co-workers that try their best to support VMS but don't have much in the way of a "sandbox" system to play with and teach themselves. The community kit just might solve that for them.

I had that error too. I worked around it by giving SYSTEM a new password from authorize (/nopwdexp).

Further investigation shows it may be a problem with the Putty configuration -- Under Connection Telnet, the checkbox for "Return key sends Telnet New Line instead of ^M" must be clear.

This message is almost always associated with the method in which you connect to the "console" on your x86 VMS VM. What's happening is that for "SECRETPASSWORD", the IO is returning "SECRETPASSWORD<CR>" and <CR> is not a valid password character. (It might not always be <CR>, but the effect is the same.)

I connect to my consoles using PUTTY with "Raw" as the connection type.
