DECNet Update

Post by indy » Mon Oct 02, 2023 11:49 am

Hi,
How can I install DECNet after I already installed OpenVMS. I did not install DECNet then - unfortunately.
I am running OpenVMS on a Windows System with VMware Workstation 17. I am not able to boot from DVD which might be the right solution.

Which OpenVMS version? _Which_ DECnet? Old (Phase IV) or new
(DECnet Plus)?

What did your Web search for:
      openvms install decnet
find? Mine found, among many other things:

      https://vmssoftware.com/docs/VSI_DECnet_Plus_Instal_Config_Gd.pdf

> [...] I am not able to boot from DVD [...]

I wouldn't expect that to be necessary, but "not able" is not a
useful description of anything. It does not say what you did. it does
not say what happened when you did it. How did you install VMS without
being able to boot from the (virtual) installation disc?

The virtual disc used to install VMS V9.2-1 seems to include the
required kits. In my current VMware Fusion environment, that's this:

V87 $ show devi dka200

Device Device Error Volume Free Trans Mnt
Name Status Count Label Blocks Count Cnt
V87$DKA200: Mounted wrtlck 0 X860921OE 97872 1 1

V87 $ dire /date /size DKA200:[KITS.decnet*]

Directory DKA200:[KITS.DECNET_PHASE_IV_X860921_KIT]

VSI-X86VMS-DECNET_PHASE_IV-V0902-1-1.PCSI$COMPRESSED;1

VSI-X86VMS-DECNET_PHASE_IV-V0902-1-1.PCSI$COMPRESSED_VNC;1
                              2 16-MAY-2023 22:45:31.97

Total of 2 files, 1819 blocks.

Directory DKA200:[KITS.DECNET_PLUS]

VSI-X86VMS-DECNET_PLUS-V0902-E-1.PCSI$COMPRESSED;1
                          61317 12-MAY-2023 10:27:58.86
VSI-X86VMS-DECNET_PLUS-V0902-E-1.PCSI$COMPRESSED_VNC;1
                              2 12-MAY-2023 10:28:03.84

Total of 2 files, 61319 blocks.

Grand total of 2 directories, 4 files, 63138 blocks.

Generally speaking, I'd expect PRODUCT INSTALL to do the job with
either of those PCSI kits.

Around here, I run DECnet Plus:

V87 $ prod show prod *decnet*
------------------------------------ ----------- ---------
PRODUCT KIT TYPE STATE
------------------------------------ ----------- ---------
VSI X86VMS DECNET_PLUS V9.2-E Full LP Installed
------------------------------------ ----------- ---------
1 item found

But many people seem to prefer the older/simpler Phase IV.

Sorry for not answering sooner.
I generated a DVD with the OpenVMS ISO file (OpenVMS 9.2-1) and was then able to mount the DVD and copy the required files to my local machine and install it.
I was just wondering whether there is another way.
So, case closed.
Thanks

   That's ok. I don't understand the answer.

> I generated a DVD with the OpenVMS ISO file (OpenVMS 9.2-1) [...]

What, exactly, does "generated a DVD" mean to you? An actual,
physical DVD-R? Why?

> [...] and was then able to mount the DVD [...]

On what, exactly? The Windows system? The VMware emulated VMS
system?

> [...] and copy the required files to my local machine [...]

_Which_ "my local machine"? The Windows system? The VMware emulated
system? "copy the required files" _how_, exactly? From where to where?
Why copy?

> [...] and install it.

Around here, I use VMware Fusion on a Mac, but I wouldn't expect that
to matter much in this case. I have a VMware virtual CD/DVD drive
"configured to use" the file "X860921OE.ISO" (someplace on the Mac file
system). On the virtual VMS system, it appears as DKA200:. It's
mounted on the VMS system using a usual MOUNT command, and the DECnet
kit files are accessible directly from it, as shown above.

There's no need to make a physical DVD. The VMS system can access
the files on the virtual DVD. There's no need to copy files. The VMS
software installers (PCSI, VMSINSTAL.COM) can access the kits on the
virtual DVD.

Other than what? You might know what you did, but I don't. Your
description is singularly unclear, but it sounds to me much more
complicated than it needed to be.

> So, case closed.

If you say so. Which DECnet version did you install?
