alpha-lp license not loadable on PWS

Post by willemgrooters » Sun Dec 19, 2021 8:53 am

After upgrading my Personal WorkStation from HP's hobbyist license to VSI community license and upgrading from HP8.3 to VSI 8.42L1, I now have a problem with the Alpha-LP license. It could be registered (no errors) nut not loaded: I get the message:

%LICENSE-W-NOLOAD, license was not loaded for ALPHA-LP
-LICENSE-F-EXCEEDED, attempted usage exceeds active license limits

The system boots into a cluster; there is one other member active at this point (DS10) that has the same licenses loaded without a problem.

I already deleted all licenses and reloaded the licenses in the PAK, but the problem persists.

Willem,

what does SHOW LIC/CHARGE show on the PWS ?

And what does SHOW LIC/USAGE ALPHA-LP show ?

If you $ LICENSE UNLOAD ALPHA-LP on the DS10, can you then issue a $ LICENSE LOAD ALPHA-LP on the PWS ?

This license may not have enough units to be loaded cluster-wide on those 2 machines.

$ sho lic/charge
VMS/LMF Charge Information for node DAPHNE
This is a Digital Personal WorkStation , hardware model type 1792
Type: A, Units Required: 12 (VAX/VMS Capacity or OpenVMS Unlimited or Base)
Type: B, * Not Permitted * (VAX/VMS F&A Server)
Type: C, * Not Permitted * (VAX/VMS Concurrent User)
Type: D, * Not Permitted * (VAX/VMS Workstation)
Type: E, * Not Permitted * (VAX/VMS System Integrated Products)
Type: F, * Not Permitted * (VAX Layered Products)
Type: G, * Not Permitted * (Reserved)
Type: H, Units Required: 1050 (Alpha Layered Products)
Type: I, Units Required: 1050 (Layered Products)
$

(This is currently reversed to HP VMS under HP's hobbyist license)

$ sho lic/charge
VMS/LMF Charge Information for node DIONE
This is a AlphaStation DS10 617 MHz, hardware model type 1963
Type: A, Units Required: 12 (VAX/VMS Capacity or OpenVMS Unlimited or Base)
Type: B, * Not Permitted * (VAX/VMS F&A Server)
Type: C, * Not Permitted * (VAX/VMS Concurrent User)
Type: D, * Not Permitted * (VAX/VMS Workstation)
Type: E, * Not Permitted * (VAX/VMS System Integrated Products)
Type: F, * Not Permitted * (VAX Layered Products)
Type: G, * Not Permitted * (Reserved)
Type: H, Units Required: 1050 (Alpha Layered Products)
Type: I, Units Required: 1050 (Layered Products)
$

(this system runs VSI VMS0842L1, under VSI community license)

But it _should_ be possible to run the systems in cluster, according the specification. so I should expect I can load the license ALPHA_LP. I have installed VSI-VMS on IA64 systems and could register and load the licenses when booted into the cluster. No problem with the ALPHA-SYSTEM license either - this worked without a problem, its just the ALPHA-LP license

Willem,

so you need at least 1050 license units for the ALPHA-LP license, to be able to load it on a single node. To be able to load the same license cluster-wide on those 2 nodes, you would need 2100 units.

If you would have issued the $ SHOW LIC/USAGE ALPHA-LP command on the DS10, you would have seen, that those units are Allocated on the DS10 and Available units would be zero.

Does this ALPHA-LP license have the MOD_UNTIS attribute ? Then you could issue a $ LICENSE MODIFY ALPHA-LP/UNITS=2010 and load them on both nodes at the same time. You would need to UNLOAD and LOAD them and also modify the units on both system disks, if you don't have a cluster-common LMF$LICENSE.LDB license database file.

It does not have the MOD_UNITS attribute, rendering the community license unusable if one of the systems in a cluster is a DS10. What would happen if an Itanium is booted in the cluster? Probably the same....

Willem,

this has nothing to do with a 'DS10' or 'PWS'. The ALPHA-LP community license seems to provide 1050 license units cluster-wide, which means that more than 1 Alpha in the cluster cannot load this license.

If you cluster your DS10 with an Itanium using community licenses, this should not be a problem, as there will be no 'ALPHA-LP' license loaded in the Itanium system.

Which makes an alpha-only cluster impossible
