How to get VMS running on VMware?

Post by craigcanberra » Thu Oct 03, 2024 9:54 am

Greetings all - newbie here. Well I'm an old VMS sys admin and I've used VMware before but for the life of me I can't get the VMS download going on VMware.

I've downloaded and installed VMware Workstation 17.6 for Windows 10. I've downloaded the Community Package which contains 2 VMDK files: community.vmdk is 1 KB and community-flat.vmdk is 5 GB. I've started VMware and clicked Create a New Virtual Machine and tried both Typical and Custom but I don't know what to do next. Nothing seems to work. What do I choose for the guest OS? How do I "add a serial port to connect to your VM console"? How do I connect and boot the supplied VMDK?

Does anyone have step by step instructions?

Thank you so much. I can't wait to see VMS again after so many years.

Craig

Look for the VMS 9.2 installation guide:
https://docs.vmssoftware.com/vsi-openvm ... ion-guide/
They have a guide to setting up the VM, then look at the PDF Setting up the VMS Community Package, although that is more for Virtualbox rather than VMWare

Also try searching the forums, as there have been a few threads on setting up VMWare

A few links for previous discussions:

I am pretty sure that I used the first to get it working for me.
